Ruth: Hope for the Marginalized is unavailable, but you can change that!

Ruth was an outcast in Israelite society. As a widow and a Moabite, she was considered the least of God’s people. Yet God drew her from the fringe of society and incorporated her into both the community of Israel and his plan of salvation. In Ruth, we find a story of love, loyalty, and compassion. And we see how God works through ordinary people to achieve his great purposes.

Naomi and her family travel to Moab because of a famine. The Old Testament includes several other accounts of people relocating due to famine (Gen 12:10–20; 26:1–33; 42:1–47:12). Naomi’s family hopes to find a fresh start in Moab, but instead they find more tragedy. By the end of this section, Naomi has lost her husband as well as her sons, and she is living in Moab as a foreigner. How does God use this tragedy for good? Why do you think God uses negative circumstances to fulfill His purposes?
